Google Maps adds the name 'Gulf of America'
The world recognizes both names.
Google Maps has recently implemented a change in the naming of the body of water located between the east coast of Mexico and the Florida peninsula. Now, users in the United States will see "Gulf of America" instead of "Gulf of Mexico." This modification comes after the formal decision by the Trump administration to rename this region.
The company has explained that this new nomenclature follows the guidelines of the GNIS, a U.S. geographic information system. Meanwhile, users in Mexico will continue to see "Gulf of Mexico," and the rest of the world will see the original name alongside "Gulf of America" in parentheses.
Google uses the geographic location of users to determine which of the two designations to display, based on data from its mobile operating system, SIM card, and network. In the case of desktop users, the modifications depend on the search settings or the device's location.
For its part, Apple Maps has not yet made any changes, although it directs searches for "Gulf of America" to "Gulf of Mexico." Other mapping platforms, such as MapQuest, have also not updated their designations. However, in Waze, which is owned by Google, searching for "Gulf of Mexico" shows both names, while searching for "Gulf of America" yields no results.
