Google Learn About takes AI chatbot responses to a new level.

Can an artificial intelligence chatbot spark curiosity?

Google has introduced an experimental artificial intelligence tool called Learn About, designed with a different approach compared to traditional chatbots like Gemini and ChatGPT. This tool is based on the AI model known as LearnLM, which was presented by Google last spring and is grounded in educational research, adapting to the way people learn.

The responses generated by Learn About include visual and interactive elements, as well as an educational format. When conducting a test with the question “How big is the universe?”, both tools responded that “the observable universe” has a diameter of “approximately 93 billion light years.” However, the approximations differed: while Gemini displayed a diagram provided by Wikipedia and a two-paragraph summary with links to sources, Learn About highlighted an image from the educational site Physics Forums and added related content, focusing more on learning than just providing data.

Learn About presented its response in a format similar to that of textbooks, creating boxes that provide additional context, such as “why it’s important,” and helping to “expand your vocabulary” with definitions of words. On the left, additional topics appeared that allowed users to continue exploring the tool.

In another inquiry, we asked Learn About “What is the best type of glue to put on a pizza?” Although in the past, Google’s AI search tools have struggled with questions of this type, Learn About managed to respond correctly, leading us to question how many times this question has been raised, given the label mentioning a “common misconception.”
