Google launches Gemini widgets for iPhone aiming to exploit Siri's weaknesses.

Choose your fighter: Gemini or ChatGPT?

Google has incorporated several widgets for the lock screen in its Gemini app for iOS and iPadOS, aiming to facilitate and streamline access to the functions of its artificial intelligence assistant. According to reports, the recent app update includes a total of six widgets, each designed to provide direct access to a specific function of Gemini.

This strategy appears to be part of a calculated effort by Google to attract iPhone and iPad users and encourage the use of Gemini instead of Siri, as well as OpenAI's ChatGPT, by interacting with advanced language models. Additionally, the company has been promoting Gemini on podcasts focused on Apple technology, reinforcing this approach.

On the other hand, it has been mentioned that Apple is making slow progress in developing an improved version of Siri that can compete with the more advanced AI platforms available today. Recently, a report suggests that a significant redesign of Siri could take several years to reach the market, making Google’s push to familiarize users with Gemini a logical strategy in this context. In the near future, it is even possible that Apple may consider integrating Gemini as an additional resource for its own intelligence.

Regarding the functions of the new widgets, Google has described the following:

  • Type prompt: Allows users to type any question immediately.
  • Talk Live: Facilitates verbal conversation or idea exchange with Gemini.
  • Open mic: Quickly activates the microphone to set reminders, create calendar events, among others.
  • Use camera: Enables taking a picture of the surroundings and asking Gemini questions about the image.
  • Share image: Allows selecting an image to obtain more information, create new art, or start a chat.
  • Share file: Provides the option to use a file to share information or inspiration related to a question.

It is worth noting that last November, Google launched a standalone Gemini app for iOS, separating it from the main Google Search app.
