Fall of the PlayStation Network
You're not alone.
PlayStation Network (PSN) has been experiencing an outage that has lasted for several hours since Friday afternoon. On Sony's PSN status page, it has been indicated that account management, gaming and social services, as well as PlayStation Video, PlayStation Store, and the PlayStation Direct website are having issues.
Regarding video games, Sony has warned that "users may have difficulty launching games, applications, or network features." The company has stated that it is working to resolve these inconveniences "as quickly as possible."
When the article was first published at 7:28 PM ET, a colleague could not access his purchased digital games or view his friends, trophies, or online status on his PS5. Later, around 11:45 PM ET, I tried to play Fortnite on my PS5, but the game showed an error message and wouldn't let me log in. Despite this, I managed to launch my digital copy of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.
In a tweet from @AskPlayStation at 8:46 PM ET, it was noted that they were aware that some users were having issues with PSN. Sony's status page indicates that problems began at 7 PM ET, although around that time, Downdetector showed user reports starting to appear about an hour earlier, around 6 PM ET. At its peak, nearly 70,000 reports of issues were recorded on Downdetector, while a thread on r/PlayStation about the outage has over 9,000 comments.
Sony has not immediately responded to a request for comment on the situation. It's worth noting that PSN had already experienced an outage of about eight hours last October and also had a partial failure in May.
