Death Stranding Joins Xbox to Celebrate Its Fifth Anniversary.
Death Stranding Director's Cut was unexpectedly released for Xbox Series X and S consoles, thereby expanding access to this social connection-focused game for a larger number of players.
Kojima Productions surprised everyone on Thursday by announcing that the Director’s Cut version of Death Stranding is now available for Xbox Series X/S and also for Windows PC, just one day before the game's fifth anniversary. Hideo Kojima expressed his satisfaction in sharing this news with Xbox players, thanking fans for their continued support and the Xbox community for their patience.
Death Stranding was initially launched as a PlayStation 4 exclusive in 2019, and later, the Director’s Cut version came to PC and PlayStation 5. Additionally, the game has been adapted for Apple devices on iOS, iPadOS, and macOS. Starting Thursday, it will also be playable on Amazon Luna, allowing Prime subscribers to enjoy it for free for one month beginning December 1.
This release marks the beginning of a broader collaboration between Xbox and Kojima Productions, as one of the company's upcoming projects, titled OD, will be published by Xbox Game Studios. Despite this new partnership, the studio maintains a good relationship with Sony and PlayStation. In fact, in January, Kojima appeared in Sony's State of Play to reveal that he is developing a mysterious stealth game called Physint.
As for Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, it has currently only been announced as a PlayStation 5 exclusive set for release in 2025. It was recently revealed that Kojima Productions has regained full intellectual property rights to Death Stranding from 505 Games. This implies that the sequel could be made available on other platforms, opening up the possibility for a release on Switch 2, allowing more players to experience the unique social connections game.
With these developments, excitement surrounding Death Stranding 2 continues to grow, although there are still many questions to be resolved about what this sequel will offer.
