Recent rumors and leaks regarding Apple products have gained traction, especially following the appearance of an unboxing video allegedly featuring the new MacBook Pro M4. This event has led to a notable increase in 'sellers' claiming they can offer the new device before its official release. However, logic suggests that this is not possible, an opinion supported by researchers at Kaspersky.
The hype surrounding this supposed leak has triggered a wave of fraudulent activities, with scammers capitalizing on the excitement to promote fake trial programs and pre-sale products. Kaspersky has detected multiple scam attempts designed to lure victims through emails offering an exclusive opportunity to test the yet-to-be-released product, which is scheduled for market release in November 2024.
The emails often include a link that redirects to a fake online store. There, victims are required to fill out a form with sensitive information and credit card details to allegedly receive the 'exclusive price.' Regardless of the authenticity of the leak, it is quite clear that the offer of a free MacBook from an unauthorized source for "testing" is misleading.
Dmitry Galov, head of Kaspersky's Research Center in Russia, remarked that the recently released video has created false expectations, leading people to think that if an influencer has obtained the device, it might also be available to the general public. He further emphasized that scammers are quick to capitalize on trends and warned that if something seems too good to be true, it probably is.
This not only puts victims at risk of immediate credit card information theft but also opens the door to identity theft threats, as compromised information could be sold on the dark web by the scammers.
