We asked the AI chatbots Gemini and ChatGPT to design our workout routines, and then we tried them out.

Can artificial intelligence help us stay fit?

Artificial intelligence has become an integral part of daily life, from OpenAI and Google Gemini chatbots to lighter applications like smart fridges. Despite controversies about its potential to undermine creativity and the personal touch in the arts, the question that arises is: Can artificial intelligence have a positive impact on our physical health and well-being?

The fitness team of a well-known platform decided to explore this question by asking ChatGPT and Google Gemini for two workouts using the same criteria. The challenge was designed for two participants, aged 33 and 29, who were looking for an at-home exercise routine focused on muscle development and cardiovascular endurance, with an approximate duration of 30 minutes and no need for gym equipment.

Workout proposed by ChatGPT

ChatGPT proposed a comprehensive routine that included a 5-minute warm-up, a circuit of exercises, and a cool-down routine. The focus was on alternating between strength exercises and cardio movements during a circuit where each exercise was performed for 45 seconds, followed by 15 seconds of rest. The goal was to complete the circuit three times with short breaks.

  • Warm-up (5 minutes):

    • Jumping Jacks: 1 minute
    • Arm circles: 30 seconds forward and 30 seconds backward
    • Bodyweight squats: 1 minute
    • High knees: 1 minute
    • Hip circles: 1 minute
  • Main workout (20 minutes):

    • The exercises included sets like push-ups, squat jumps, and burpees, ensuring a full-body workout.
  • Cool-down (5 minutes):

    • Stretching exercises and deep breathing.

While this proposal was complete in its structure, it was noticed that the total work time exceeded 60 minutes, which could be detrimental for someone less experienced.

Workout proposed by Google Gemini

On the other hand, Google Gemini also presented a 30-minute plan divided into a 5-minute warm-up, a 10-minute strength circuit, a 10-minute cardio interval training section, followed by a 5-minute cool-down.

  • Warm-up (5 minutes):

    • Light cardio and dynamic stretches to prepare the muscles.
  • Workout (20 minutes):

    • A strength circuit with basic exercises such as squats, push-ups, and planks, followed by cardio intervals.

Gemini stood out for having a simpler approach in its structure, although it achieved good results by allowing participants to focus on the strength portion and then have targeted cardio at the end.

Reflection on the workouts

Both workouts had similarities in their structure but with different levels of detail. ChatGPT's plan was more robust, offering detailed instructions, while Gemini provided a simpler proposal. Although both were effective, it became evident that presenting workouts in a more digestible manner would be beneficial for better implementation in the gym.

In conclusion, both workouts offered a solid exercise experience and demonstrated that it is not necessary to have an expensive gym to perform an effective workout. However, it should be highlighted that users must exercise caution when using artificial intelligence to create their routines, especially if they are beginners in exercising.
