AWS opens physical access points for customers to upload their data.

Amazon Web Services, Amazon's cloud computing division, has opened physical spaces where customers can upload their data.

During the re:Invent 2024 conference in Las Vegas, Amazon introduced a new and unique service for Amazon Web Services (AWS) users: the Data Transfer Terminal. This set of physical locations allows customers to connect their storage devices to upload data to the AWS cloud.

The operation is quite straightforward. Customers can schedule an appointment through the AWS management console and optionally designate specialists from their organization to assist in the process. On the scheduled day and time, users arrive at the Data Transfer Terminal location and confirm their access with the building's reception. According to Channy Yun, a principal developer advocate at AWS, visitors are guided by building staff to the designated area for data transfer. It is important to note that there will be no AWS signage in the building or room, for security and privacy reasons.

The first Data Transfer Terminals have been installed in New York and Los Angeles, with more expected to be added in the future. Each location features a connection panel, fiber optic cable, and a computer to monitor data transfer tasks.

This service promises fast upload speeds, reaching up to 400 Gbps, through secure and high-performance connections. However, users will need to pay for this service. Amazon charges "per port hour" during the reservation, even when no information is being transferred. Minimum fees apply for the reserved time, with charges of $300 for “U.S. to U.S.” transfers and $500 for “U.S. to EU” transfers. Prices for transfers to other regions of the world have not been specified.
