Apple may increase iPhone imports from India to evade tariffs in China.
Apple is evaluating the possibility of increasing the import of iPhones from India to avoid the 54% additional tariffs applied to products arriving in the United States from China.
Apple is assessing the possibility of increasing the import of iPhones from India to avoid the high 54% tariffs recently announced by U.S. President Donald Trump on products coming from China. According to reports from anonymous sources, this strategy is seen as a temporary measure while the company attempts to negotiate an exemption from these tariffs, as it still does not want to modify its supply chain, which is focused on China.
In comparison to the new 54% tariffs on goods manufactured in China, a 26% tariff has been proposed for products arriving from India. If these tariffs are not reduced and Apple continues to import iPhones from China, the cost of an iPhone 16 Pro that previously had an import cost of $550 could increase by $300 due to the tariffs.
This year, Apple had projected to manufacture 25 million iPhones in India, of which 10 million would be intended for the local market. According to a Bank of America analyst, Wamsi Mohan, if Apple chose to import all 25 million iPhones to the United States, this could cover approximately 50% of the demand in the U.S. market.
