An alternative to TikTok called Loops is preparing to enter the fediverse.
Loops is committed to providing the TikTok experience in the fediverse.
Registrations are now open for Loops, a new short looping video application created by the developer of Pixelfed, an alternative to Instagram. According to the manager Daniel Supernault, registered users will be able to upload videos of up to 60 seconds. Additionally, it has been announced that features such as the use of sounds, the ability to remix other people's videos, and the option to pin videos to profiles will soon be available. Users will also be able to "curate" the comments section, while a video ranking system will be implemented, although for now, hashtags and mentions will not be allowed.
The Loops account on Pixelfed has begun sharing videos showcasing the application in action. Supernault has provided screenshots and screen recordings in his posts. The account creation process is not immediate, as users must wait for a confirmation email, the arrival time of which may vary. The iOS app will initially be available on TestFlight, an Apple program for testing unreleased applications that requires a free developer account. There will also be an Android app that can be installed through alternative means.
Loops will have human moderators, for which Supernault has made a call on Mastodon. Videos uploaded to the site will be moderated based on a trust score that each local user has. Thus, videos shared by users with low scores will remain under moderation before being published, while those from "trusted users" will be published immediately. Although integration with the fediverse is in progress, it is not yet active, and the platform has not been open source thus far. Users will retain ownership of their content, and Loops does not sell or provide videos to external advertisers nor uses the content to train AI models. Instead, the platform will be funded through grants, sponsorships, and donations.
