A new report criticizes the repairability of MacBooks. Here's what you can do if you need to repair yours.

Apple laptops are quite complicated to repair. However, if yours is damaged, you still have several alternatives to fix it. Here are the best options available.

Apple's MacBooks have built a solid reputation for their exceptional software support and build quality, features that often allow them to have a longer lifespan than other devices on the market. However, a downside to this situation is the difficulty they present for repairs, which require specialized tools, a complicated disassembly process, and the patience of a saint.

A recent report from the US Public Interest Research Group (PIRG) Education Fund has backed this perception by revealing that MacBooks are among the least repairable laptops, ranking second on this unfortunate list, surpassed only by Lenovo. Apple's disassembly rating was particularly low, which is bad news for those trying to repair their expensive laptop.

Despite these drawbacks, options for repairing a broken MacBook are not scarce, and many of them do not require the user to have technical knowledge. One route to take is to purchase AppleCare+, which acts as an extension of the original Mac warranty. This service, available for various Apple products, offers numerous advantages. For instance, the monthly cost for the 14-inch MacBook Pro is $9.99, while for the 13-inch MacBook Air, it is $6.99 per month. AppleCare+ covers unlimited accidental damage during its term, though there is an additional charge for each incident.

All repair services performed under this program are carried out by official Apple technicians using original parts. This means that if the MacBook has any issues, the simplest solution is to go to an Apple Store, which alleviates concerns about the repair process. Typically, AppleCare+ must be purchased within 60 days of buying the Mac, although there is the possibility of requesting it outside this period as long as the device is in good condition.

It is not mandatory to have AppleCare+ to receive service at an Apple Store. If the device is presented, the staff will assess and offer necessary repairs, although costs are usually quite high. If these prices are prohibitive, another option is to visit a third-party repair shop, where costs may be more accessible. It is recommended to look for Apple-authorized shops, which receive training and have access to original parts, or to opt for common reprocessing stores, although in this case, it is essential to check their reviews to ensure good service.

On the other hand, Apple has begun offering self-service repair kits, allowing more experienced users to perform repairs themselves. For this, users must consult the repair manuals available on Apple's website and purchase the necessary parts from the self-service store. After completing the repair, users can return the damaged parts to Apple for refurbishment or recycling, which could even generate credits.

However, this option is intended for those who feel confident and have experience, as any mistakes will fall on the user. In general, those who do not feel comfortable with the repair process might benefit more from visiting Apple or a specialized shop.
