Los usuarios de Threads ahora pueden compartir en la red social abierta, también conocida como el fediverso.

Threads, el rival de Twitter/X de Instagram, está ampliando su expansión en el fediverso, la red social interconectada que incluye aplicaciones como Mastodon.

Instagram's rival Threads, which competes with Twitter, is expanding into the fediverse, a network that includes platforms like Mastodon and PeerTube. Meta, the parent company of Instagram, announced on Tuesday that Threads users over 18 with a public account can now beta test sharing with the fediverse in global markets. Initially launched in March in three countries, the beta is now available in over 100 countries, as mentioned by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg on Threads.

In addition to the expansion, Meta is focusing on educating users about the fediverse, aiming to make it more accessible to a broader audience. Threads now includes an explainer on the fediverse, describing it as a network of interconnected servers and clarifying how sharing works. This initiative could potentially attract more users to explore the fediverse, especially those who found existing federated apps like Mastodon daunting.

Furthermore, Meta is enabling authors of federated posts to like and view replies from the wider fediverse. However, the feature to respond to these replies is not yet active. When opting in to fediverse sharing, Threads posts will be visible on Mastodon, with likes and replies from Mastodon appearing on Threads. For now, only top-level posts and self-replies are being federated, while other post types are not supported.

To activate fediverse sharing in Threads, users can access the option in their Account Settings, labeled as "Fediverse Sharing (Beta)." Instagram expressed its commitment to responsibly growing the fediverse, emphasizing the importance of creating a safe, diverse, and content-rich community.

With over 150 million monthly active users as of April, Threads has quickly become a significant player in the fediverse. The broader fediverse boasts more than 11 million users, with over 800,000 active users on Mastodon monthly.
