Will QDEL replace OLED? Are we facing the disappearance of 55 and 65-inch televisions?
QDEL is an intriguing technology with great potential, and I eagerly anticipate its development in the coming years.
In a recent discussion about TV technology, the topic of QDEL was addressed, an innovative technology that promises to advance in the market. Although it is seen as an alternative, the possibility of it competing with current OLED and MicroLED models still seems distant. When a TV with this technology eventually launches, it is likely to be promoted as the latest breakthrough, with a price comparable to OLEDs, despite its lower production costs. QDEL is not expected to completely replace LCD-based technology in the short term; however, it could replace OLED, although it wouldn’t be advisable to wait for its release if you plan to purchase a new TV in the coming years. Generally, it is not recommended to wait for "the next big thing" since a new alternative always comes along.
Regarding trends in TV sizes, the question was raised whether the standard models of 55 and 65 inches are in decline. It seems unlikely that companies like Samsung and LG will eliminate these sizes. While models larger than 80 inches are on the rise — particularly the 85-inch size, which is becoming very popular — the 65-inch size remains the preferred choice due to its balance between size and manageability for most consumers.
On another note, LG has withdrawn four models of 86-inch TVs from the market due to stability issues with their support legs, which has led to tipping incidents. Although no injuries have been reported in the 12 documented cases, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has warned about injury risks, especially for children. The affected TVs, which weigh around 100 pounds, were sold through various chains and online between March and September 2022, with prices ranging from $1,100 to $1,900. Owners of these models are advised to remove the legs and install the TV in a safe place unless it is wall-mounted, in which case no additional action is required.
Finally, Samsung Display has announced the presentation of a 77-inch QD-OLED panel at CES 2023, although it has not yet been confirmed whether Samsung Electronics will launch a TV of this size during the event.
