Why Did Automakers Eliminate the Spare Tire? I Have No Idea, but the Chery Omoda E5 Is Reintroducing It.

Tranquility should be a standard, not an added benefit.

Currently, the automotive sector is experiencing a trend towards minimalist design, largely inspired by Tesla. However, this evolution has resulted in the elimination of essential elements, such as the instrument panel and tactile buttons, in favor of greater customization of infotainment systems. This phenomenon is particularly evident in the realm of electric vehicles (EVs). A refreshing example of resistance to this trend is the Chery Omoda E5, sold in the UK simply as the Omoda E5 and originating from China.

Although the author of the article initially suggested that the Omoda E5 might be more suitable for Australian consumers focused on value for money, it is observed that British consumers have more options in the same price range. Compared to its competitors, this model does not stand out in terms of driving comfort, boot capacity, or DC charging time. However, its price-to-range ratio is noteworthy, and certain features of the slightly more expensive version are worth mentioning.

Among both versions, in Australia as well as in the UK, one aspect that stands out is the inclusion of a full-size spare tire, which can be easily stored under the boot mat. This type of feature has become unusual in new cars, especially in electric ones, being a common characteristic in vehicles designed for off-road use, such as robust SUVs and trucks.

The spare tire is often considered an unnecessary luxury, as many manufacturers argue that the space it occupies could be used to increase interior capacity or to install larger batteries. Of the more than 30 EV evaluations conducted, only two models, the Omoda E5 and the 2024 Hyundai Kona EV, offer a full-size spare tire, although there are a few exceptions.

While there are arguments against its inclusion, such as a preference for lighter solutions, a full-sized spare tire provides significant advantages for the owner. While a puncture repair kit may work for minor holes, it has limitations, and a spare tire allows the driver to keep their vehicle operational during long trips. Additionally, roadside assistance can be less convenient and time-consuming, especially in rural areas where workshops may be far away.

In summary, while it may be feasible to rely on alternative solutions in urban environments, in rural areas, the presence of a spare tire is essential. Having a full tire can provide peace of mind on the road, particularly for those living far from mechanical services or planning road trips.
