I've tried the new Renault 5, and finally, it's the first compact and fun electric car for the general public.
We have experienced the era of luxury electric vehicles; now it is time to welcome more affordable and fun options.
The Renault 5 is a vehicle that has left an indelible mark on the automotive history of France, being considered a national treasure by many. This hatchback, which was born in the 1970s, was presented as an accessible and efficient solution in the context of the energy crises facing the country. Its purpose was clear from the start: to be an economical car, easy to maintain, and attractive enough to stand out in a difficult time in Europe. With sales reaching 5.5 million units between 1972 and 1985, its legacy is indisputable.
Recently, Renault has introduced a fully electric version of this iconic model, the Renault 5 E-Tech 100% Electric. The presentation of this vehicle has generated great anticipation due to its rich heritage. Luca de Meo, the CEO of Renault, shared his fascination for an initial prototype that captured his attention, recognizing the need for a more affordable and accessible electric car for the general public.
The modern design of the new Renault 5 pays homage to the original model, incorporating stylistic elements that evoke the aesthetics of the 1970s. With a price starting around £23,000 (approximately $30,000), this new car features a number of clever characteristics. Among them is an exterior battery charge indicator that lights up in sections reflecting the charge capacity, along with LED lights that greet the driver upon approach.
The interior is designed to be exceptional in its price range, with seats reminiscent of the Renault 5 Turbo and two digital screens integrating Renault technology with Google. This includes Google Maps for easy navigation, as well as access to a variety of entertainment applications. Additionally, an artificial intelligence assistant named Reno is available to answer questions about the vehicle and help with daily tasks.
Driving the new Renault 5 does not disappoint. Although it may not be as exciting as the classic model, it maintains agile handling thanks to its multi-link rear suspension and a total weight that allows for good responsiveness on the road. It offers motorization options ranging from a 90 kW engine to a 110 kW engine, providing a range between 190 and 250 miles on a single charge.
The Renault 5 E-Tech stands out not only for its design and technology but also for its functionality, capable of towing a load of up to 500 kg, a rare feature in its category. With its arrival in the market, many hope that this vehicle will pave the way for a new generation of affordable electric cars, highlighting Renault's experience in automobile manufacturing.
