WhatsApp could soon allow you to disable the camera when answering video calls.
Soon users may have the option to convert video calls into audio-only calls.
WhatsApp has evolved its video call functionality, transitioning from individual interactions to supporting group calls with a maximum of 32 participants, making it a popular choice for both personal and professional use. Recently, it has been reported that the application is working on a major update aimed at enhancing user privacy by allowing greater control over video calls, giving users the option to join without needing to turn on their camera.
WhatsApp is testing a new feature that allows users to disable their camera before answering a video call. This feature has been mentioned in a beta version of WhatsApp (2.25.7.3 for Android). With this update, upon receiving a video call, users will have the option to "Turn off video," which will allow them to accept the call in audio-only mode before answering. Currently, the camera can only be turned off after answering, but this new functionality provides the ability to "Accept without video," thereby improving convenience and control over privacy.
In its current state, WhatsApp activates the front camera when receiving a video call, allowing for a preview before the phone rings. The new option to disable the camera before answering is seen as a measure to protect privacy, especially on calls from unknown numbers. While it is generally advised to avoid answering calls from unknown numbers, this feature offers an additional layer of privacy when needed.
Additionally, WhatsApp allows users to mute calls from unknown numbers, preventing interruptions while still keeping a record of the call in the call log. This ensures that users do not have to deal with unwanted calls while staying aware of any failed contact attempts.
This update comes at a time when it is also reported that Google is developing a solution that will allow Google Messages users to make video calls to WhatsApp users without needing to leave the Google Messages app.
