Shure has recently launched the MoveMic 88+, a wireless microphone that connects directly to mobile phones and features four selectable polar patterns. According to the company, this is the first microphone of its kind to offer this functionality. For those unfamiliar, polar patterns determine from which direction a microphone captures sound. Most microphones in this category only offer an omnidirectional pattern, which records sound evenly from all directions. Some brands opt for a cardioid pattern, which focuses on capturing audio from a single direction.
The MoveMic 88+ not only includes the mentioned patterns, but also offers bidirectional and side-to-side options. This results in greater versatility for different types of recordings. For instance, the cardioid pattern is ideal for recording a TikTok video or an acoustic performance. The bidirectional pattern is the most suitable option for interviews between two people, while the omnidirectional pattern is best for outdoor recordings.
This microphone also offers multiple mounting options. It is compatible with most tripods and microphone stands thanks to the included clips and can be used as a handheld microphone. It connects directly to a mobile phone through Shure's MOTIV app, eliminating the need for the MoveMic receiver. However, it can also integrate with the receiver if you wish to use it with a conventional camera or computer.
The app also allows users to adjust different aspects of the audio, including gain, equalization, and high-pass filter, among other options. The wireless range reaches up to 30 meters and the battery lasts approximately eight hours per charge. The MoveMic 88+ is now available for $299 and includes a cold shoe clip, a 5/8” microphone clip, and a USB-C charging cable. Additionally, it is worth noting that Shure introduced another wireless microphone for phones last year, although it did not have selectable polar patterns. Recently, the company also revealed a condenser microphone with a built-in two-channel audio interface.
