The Schlage Sense Pro smart lock is one of the first to offer hands-free unlocking via UWB.
Look... there are no keys!
The door lock is experiencing a remarkable moment with the recent unveiling of Schlage, one of the oldest lock manufacturers in the United States. This company has launched its first smart lock without a key, the Schlage Sense Pro Smart Deadbolt. However, the most noteworthy aspect is that this model is the company's first to be compatible with the new smart home standard called Matter, and also one of the first locks to utilize ultra-wideband (UWB) technology for hands-free unlocking.
Alongside the Sense Pro, Schlage has introduced a new entry-level smart lock model. The Schlage Arrive Smart WiFi Deadbolt, priced at $199, includes a key and a button keypad for those who prefer not to use touch screens. These new locks add to the company's existing line of Encode smart locks.
The Schlage Sense Pro represents an innovative design for Schlage locks and is available in two finishes: satin nickel and matte black. While the option for a more affordable smart lock is welcome (the Encode locks start at $274), the Sense Pro is what draws attention. With a radical redesign, this new lock features a completely smooth surface and lacks a keyhole. Unlike other keyless smart locks, this is a significant advance for Schlage, which has over 100 years of history. It also does not include a fingerprint reader, suggesting that the company has chosen to focus on UWB technology as the main option for seamless unlocking.
The Sense Pro allows unlocking via a numeric code and an NFC touch unlocking system, similar to Apple Home Key's function. Additionally, it can automatically unlock when the user approaches the door, utilizing UWB to calculate speed, trajectory, and movement, ensuring an intuitive and precise entry.
To take advantage of the hands-free unlocking feature, the user's phone or smartwatch needs to have UWB technology. Schlage has promised to provide more details on compatibility with specific models before the public launch. Although it will initially work with the new Schlage Converge technology, the Sense Pro lock will also be compatible with Aliro, an open standard that will be available this year, allowing NFC and UWB unlocking across different ecosystems and devices.
Regarding ecosystem support, the Sense Pro is Schlage's first lock compatible with Matter, meaning it will work with any system that supports this standard, including Apple Home, Samsung SmartThings, Amazon Alexa, Google Home, and Home Assistant. Compatibility with Matter is achieved through Thread, a low-power, low-latency protocol designed for battery-operated devices like locks. While the company has not provided details about battery life, this system should ensure adequate performance. It is worth noting that while Thread technology is used in the Encode Plus model, this latter one is not compatible with Matter.
The Schlage Sense Pro is expected to be launched this year, although the company has not specified an exact date or price. On the other hand, the Arrive lock comes in three styles: Camelot, Century, and a new Remsen design, and will be available in satin nickel and matte black. Although it lacks the advanced features of the Sense Pro, the Arrive is Schlage's first lock to include a button keypad and integrated Wi-Fi, allowing programming of up to 250 codes through the new Schlage app or unlocking with a physical key. It is also compatible with Amazon Alexa and Google Home, although it does not support Matter. The Arrive is slated for release in late spring 2025.
