The Return of the Portable: Eurocom's 18-Inch Monster, Weighing 8 Pounds, Could Redefine the Concept of a Laptop.
This $15,000 laptop is the only one that can support 256 GB of memory and also features an RTX 5090 GPU.
Eurocom has introduced an update to its standout mobile supercomputer, the Raptor X18, known for being one of the fastest laptops ever made. This model is shaping up to be a strong contender for one of the best mobile workstations available. Its basic configuration includes an Intel Core Ultra 9 275HX processor, the most powerful in the laptop sector, while the most advanced version is priced over $15,000.
For this investment, users get an Nvidia Geforce RTX5090 graphics card with 24GB of GDDR7, in addition to 256GB of DDR5 RAM, making it the only laptop capable of handling such a large amount of memory. For storage, it includes four 8TB WD_Black PCIe Gen4 drives in a RAID-0 configuration. In terms of design and manufacturing, Eurocom has collaborated with an ODM, likely Clevo, to produce this machine, which presents a functional yet somewhat understated finish, evidenced by the presence of a backlit RGB keyboard, anti-ghosting, and N-Key Rollover.
The Raptor X18 not only stands out as a mobile supercomputer but also as a powerful gaming laptop. Its 18-inch display offers a UHD+ resolution (3240 x 2400 pixels) with a 16:10 aspect ratio and a refresh rate of 200Hz, making it an attractive panel for gaming as well. However, its battery life may be a significant limitation; despite having a 99Whr battery, it is estimated that users should not expect to use the device under load for more than 60 minutes, given that its GPU and CPU draw significant power, requiring up to 175W and 55W respectively. Additionally, its weight (3.6 kg) and dimensions (400 x 320 x 33 mm) make it more of a desktop replacement than a true portable.
Compared to Apple’s 16-inch MacBook Pro, which is one of the standout laptops on the market, the Raptor X18 comes at a considerably higher cost. Apple’s most powerful version is priced at a maximum of $7,199, while the variant with 1TB SSD is offered at $4,999. In terms of performance, the Core Ultra 9 275HX surpasses Apple’s M4 Max in benchmark tests, with a CPU Mark score of over 61,000 compared to approximately 43,700 for Apple’s model.
Other laptops with the Core 9 Ultra 275HX processor are expected in the coming weeks; however, the Raptor X18 is the only one featuring four SODIMM slots. When compared to the Dell Precision 5860 workstation, which was configured to match the specifications of the Raptor X18, the result was a price of $15,700 excluding a 4K monitor, highlighting the high cost of professional hardware. A notable aspect of the Raptor X18 is the inclusion of two 2.5GbE Ethernet ports, a first in the portable sector, along with Wi-Fi 7.
