HBO has confirmed that the second season of The Last of Us will premiere on April 13 at 9 p.m. ET/PT. This new installment will consist of a total of seven episodes and will be available on both HBO and the streaming platform Max. Along with the release date, HBO has unveiled three character posters featuring Pedro Pascal as Joel, Bella Ramsey as Ellie, and Kaitlyn Dever as Abby.
The plot of this second season will take place five years after the events that concluded the first season. According to HBO, "Joel and Ellie will find themselves embroiled in a conflict between them and in a world that is even more dangerous and unpredictable than the one they escaped from."
At the end of the first season, Joel managed to rescue Ellie from the Fireflies, who were planning to perform a surgical intervention in an attempt to find a cure for the Cordyceps virus. Instead of confessing to Ellie what he did, Joel hides from her that he eliminated the Fireflies, claiming that it was not possible to create the cure. Both return to the Jackson settlement at the end of the first season.
Returning cast members include Gabriel Luna as Tommy and Rutina Wesley as Maria. New additions include Isabela Merced as Dina, Young Mazino as Jesse, Ariela Barer as Mel, Tati Gabrielle as Nora, Spencer Lord as Owen, Danny Ramirez as Manny, and Jeffrey Wright as Isaac. Additionally, Catherine O'Hara will appear as a guest star.
The Last of Us, based on the acclaimed video game franchise by Naughty Dog, has its script and executive production by Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann. The first season received widespread acclaim, winning eight Emmy Awards out of 24 nominations.
