The Oura Ring features an impressive function to detect if you are sick.
A powerful feature that was previously tested in the Oura beta program has now been officially released and is available to all users.
A new feature of the Oura smart ring, called Symptom Radar, has been officially launched and is now available to all users. This system uses data collected during sleep to act as an early warning for potential respiratory illnesses. The functionality allows for the detection of whether the user is beginning to feel unwell.
The Symptom Radar provides a daily report that categorizes the user's status into three levels: no signs of illness, minor signs, and significant signs of respiratory illnesses. Additionally, it presents the evolution of these symptoms through a graph that allows for the monitoring of personal well-being over time.
This system is based on various metrics, such as heart rate, heart rate variability (HRV), respiratory rate, and body temperature. These metrics are compared to historical data that the ring has collected since its first use, allowing the user to observe any changes occurring in their body. The visualization of the data also helps users better understand how their body interacts with their overall well-being.
If the Symptom Radar detects minor or severe signs of any respiratory illness, the app suggests entering rest mode. This mode interrupts activity tracking and goals, guiding the user toward effective recovery. However, the ring will continue to record sleep, contributing to additional insights into the progression of any existing illness, making the use of the device more valuable even during times of discomfort.
The development of this feature has taken nearly five years, starting with the study of the correlation between changes in body temperature and the onset of fever, culminating in new algorithms that include multiple metrics to alert about possible symptoms. Oura claims that the ring offers 99% accuracy in temperature measurement compared to laboratory standards.
The Symptom Radar will be accessible in the Oura app starting December 9 for users of the third-generation Oura Ring and the latest Oura Ring 4. This feature marks the first transition of Oura Labs from the beta environment to its integration into the main app, providing a tool ready for use by all users.
