The Nikon Zf retro camera receives its first major free firmware update: discover the new standout features that have been added.
Great advances in bird photography and manual focusing are expected.
Nikon has released its first major firmware update for the full-frame mirrorless camera Zf. The update 2.0 incorporates several new features derived from other models, such as the Z9 and Z6 III.
One of the standout features is the inclusion of a new dedicated mode for bird detection in the autofocus system. Previously, users had to rely on Animal or Auto modes, but this new option will significantly enhance the accuracy and speed of focusing and tracking performance in bird photography situations. Although the Zf is more geared towards travel or street photography, this improvement could be a useful tool for some.
The second major enhancement is compatibility with Nikon's Hi-Res Zoom video mode, allowing users to digitally zoom up to 2x on a subject while recording in 1080p without any loss of resolution. This represents a considerable advancement over standard digital zoom, which can compromise image quality.
For those who prefer using manual focus lenses, the magnification feature has been improved, increasing the maximum limit to 400% from the previous 200%. Additionally, users can now remove this magnification from the screen or viewfinder with a half-press of the shutter button, making it easy to see the entire composition of the image. The update also enables users to adjust ISO and exposure compensation via the command dials, as well as manually set the aperture when using lenses that do not automatically communicate with the Zf.
Finally, the new update allows connection to Nikon Imaging Cloud, facilitating the automatic upload of images from the camera to cloud storage via Wi-Fi. This functionality is also compatible with third-party services like Lightroom or Google Drive, making uploads direct and automatic. Moreover, users can utilize this cloud service to keep their firmware updated and access additional color profiles.
Update 2.0 offers a range of features that could transform the experience for Zf users, and it is now available for free download.
