DJI has introduced two new gimbals for smartphones, the Osmo Mobile 7 and the Osmo Mobile 7P. The latter stands out for offering native app tracking on both Android and iOS, thanks to its "Multifunctional Module." This feature is clearly designed to compete with the Insta360 Flow 2 Pro, which until recently only provided native app tracking on iPhones through Apple's Dockkit.
The main differences between the Osmo Mobile 7 and the 7P lie in the fact that the 7P includes the Multifunctional Module, while the standard 7 does not (although it can be purchased separately later). Additionally, the Osmo Mobile 7P features an integrated extendable rod, which is absent in the Osmo Mobile 7. Despite these differences, both models have a foldable design similar to that of the Osmo Mobile 6. A key improvement in both is the inclusion of a tripod that is now built into the gimbal, eliminating the need to add an accessory like in previous versions.
The Osmo Mobile 7P has been sent out for testing, and it can be observed that, like its predecessor, it is primarily designed as a three-axis stabilizer, improving the stability of videos recorded with smartphones. It offers "Tilt Lock" and "FPV" recording modes, ideal for stable or more dynamic shots. It also allows control of the gimbal's direction through an integrated joystick.
One of its standout features is the automatic subject tracking, thanks to the Multifunctional Module. In its predecessor, automatic tracking only worked with DJI Mimo, but now, by connecting the new module to a smartphone, the Osmo Mobile 7P can automatically track the subject, even with gesture control, in almost any Android or iPhone app.
The Multifunctional Module can be mounted for both the main and front cameras. It has a size comparable to DJI's Mic 2 and includes a tracking camera and an integrated LED light. It also acts as a receiver for DJI's Mic Mini wireless microphones. By installing the module and connecting it to your phone via a USB-C cable, you can open the app of your choice. Just by raising your hand in front of the camera, tracking begins automatically, indicated by a green light on the module. Then, by raising two fingers, you can start and stop recording, all while moving around for vlogs or video calls.
Recently, Insta360 also released a similar module for its Flow 2 Pro called AI Tracker, which serves the same purpose. So far, native app tracking on the Flow 2 Pro was only available for iPhones via the Dockkit, leaving Android users without that option. The new Insta360 module brings that functionality to Android devices, although at a cost of $40, or bundled with the Flow 2 Pro for $180.
This raises the question of whether DJI will offer Dockkit support for the Osmo Mobile 7/7P, allowing iPhone users to benefit from the module's tracking without the need to purchase it. However, DJI has yet to make any statements regarding this matter.
Additional features of both gimbals include a battery life of 10 hours and the ability to use them as a power bank to charge your phone when not in use. Through the DJI Mimo app, tracking supports multiple subjects in a scene, as well as pets, and it’s easy to switch the target simply by tapping on the tracking box. The app also allows for panoramic shots, dynamic zoom, and other smart functions, including zoom/focus control through a side wheel that also activates the fill light.
The Multifunctional Module of the Osmo Mobile 7P also functions as a receiver for DJI's Mic Mini transmitter, providing superior sound quality compared to recording solely from the phone, which represents a significant advantage over the Flow 2 Pro.
With direct competition from Insta360, the Osmo Mobile 7/7P presents itself as an interesting addition to DJI’s portfolio, especially considering the new AI Module of the Flow 2 Pro. The prices for the Osmo Mobile 7 ($89) and the Osmo Mobile 7P ($149) are already available for pre-order, with shipments starting immediately. The cost of the OM 7 series Tracking Kit when purchased separately has yet to be reported.
