The big tech companies remain silent on Trump's tariffs.
Tariffs could affect companies like Apple and Google, although they have not yet commented on this.
Over the weekend, President Trump announced that tariffs of up to 25% would be imposed on imported products from Canada, China, and Mexico. This decision could have a considerable impact on some of the most prominent figures in the technology and video game sectors, who have, until now, remained silent regarding this measure.
Shortly after the announcement of the tariffs, various tech companies were contacted for their opinions. However, only Google and Microsoft responded, indicating that they would not make comments. This morning, emails were sent to Apple, Google, Meta, Microsoft, Nintendo, Samsung, and Sony, but no responses were received. Additionally, attempts were made to contact Nvidia, but their spokesperson, Stephanie Matthew, also declined to make a statement.
The tariffs affecting Canada and China will take effect this Tuesday, while Trump agreed to a one-month pause on the tariffs aimed at Mexico.
Despite the silence from companies in the sector, comments from industry groups have emerged. Jason Oxman, president and CEO of the Information Technology Industry Council, urged the Trump administration to seek clear and constructive outcomes in its negotiations with foreign governments, avoid trade restrictions that could weaken American economic ties, and reconsider the tariffs once the desired results are achieved.
Meanwhile, the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) spoke out, highlighting that "tariffs on video game devices and related products would affect Americans of all ages across the country." The group also called for the Trump administration to collaborate transparently with the private sector to prevent causing significant harm to citizens.
