The announcement of the Chrono Trigger anniversary sparks expectations for a possible remake.

Square Enix has hinted that there are more projects related to the Chrono Trigger universe, which has raised expectations for a possible remake, although no specific promises have been made.

Today marks the 30th anniversary of the release of Chrono Trigger, a classic video game that was launched in 1995. To celebrate this special date, Square Enix has announced various activities and projects that will extend throughout the year. One of the highlighted events is a 33-hour live stream that will start on March 13 at 7 PM PT and conclude on March 15 around 4 AM PT, which can be followed on YouTube.

In a recent post, Square Enix expressed its gratitude to all Chrono Trigger fans, indicating that they will release various projects related to the franchise. The mention of “multiple projects” has generated expectations about the possibility of a remake. Many fans are eager for the original game to return with a new presentation, possibly in a style similar to the HD-2D of Octopath Traveler.

Although Chrono Trigger is available on platforms like Steam and mobile devices, it is not currently available on next-gen consoles like PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, or Nintendo Switch. Its sequel, Chrono Cross, was re-released in 2022 as the Radical Dreamers Edition, incorporating significant improvements such as updated graphics and a fast-forward mode.

Furthermore, Square Enix has hinted that its projects will expand “beyond the world of video games” in the coming year, suggesting the possibility of adaptations into anime, board games, or even card games. While there is no confirmation of a remake, the anniversary is a fitting time for the launch of such projects. Chrono Trigger has left an indelible mark on the RPG genre, and it is clear that its legacy continues to thrive among fans.
