T-Mobile and Starlink are advancing in their joint project to offer mobile phone services via Starlink's satellites. Last month, the companies received approval from the FCC to carry out this initiative, and they have now opened registrations for those who wish to participate in the beta test of the service, named T-Mobile Starlink, which connects directly with the satellites.
The first phase of testing is scheduled for 2025 and will initially focus on sending text messages. Over time, plans include extending voice and data connectivity. T-Mobile customers with postpaid plans and compatible devices can sign up to participate in this free beta. However, spaces are limited, and priority will be given to emergency agencies and individuals in critical situations.
It is worth noting that T-Mobile Starlink had already received emergency approval to temporarily activate the service during hurricanes Helene and Milton. According to the company, although they did not have the entire constellation of satellites operational, users equipped with the appropriate devices were able to receive emergency alerts and send and receive messages when the satellites were overhead. This implementation proved useful for those who lost access to mobile or broadband networks, providing essential information that will help improve the service.
With the collaboration of Starlink, T-Mobile plans to provide coverage over the 500,000 square miles of U.S. territory that currently lacks terrestrial phone towers. The satellite constellation is designed to integrate into T-Mobile's existing network, functioning similarly to traditional mobile services. In the long term, T-Mobile Starlink is expected to be available in most outdoor areas where the sky is visible.
