Strava introduces four new features that users will love, including a significant improvement in map representation.

Watch how that terrain progresses in 3D.

Strava has introduced four significant updates to its app, featuring the launch of an innovative 3D map rendering engine that promises to offer an unprecedented level of detail in terrains and routes. This enhancement aims to further boost one of the most recognized applications in the fitness realm.

The other updates are more subtle but equally significant. Users now have the ability to filter their saved routes by keywords or categorize them by sport type, distance, elevation, owner, and surface type. Additionally, the new Activity Details page provides a more immersive experience, with a full-screen design that includes routes, photos, and videos, making it easier to view highlights and achievements.

Another notable change is the ability to export Strava Stickers directly to Instagram Stories, as well as the option to download these stickers for use on other platforms.

The most exciting addition is undoubtedly the new 3D mapping. Strava has incorporated its own mapping engine into the app, promising realistic 3D terrain, detailed satellite imagery, and new map layers for trails and winter activities. This Map Rendering Engine (MRE) utilizes a technology called FATMAP, acquired in 2022, which will allow users to get more accurate information on avalanche gradients, overall slopes, slope orientation, and winter-specific map styles, thereby facilitating the planning of activities in cold climates.

The new maps are available in the Maps tab of the app, allowing for their visualization when reviewing past activities. Strava has promised to continue developing the MRE, adding more improvements and innovations in the future, suggesting that there is much to discover in upcoming versions.
