Some Chromecasts are displaying 'Untrusted Device' errors today.
Users fear that the devices are destined for Google's oblivion.
Users of second-generation Chromecast devices and Chromecast Audio have begun reporting warnings about "outdated" firmware. These alerts indicate that the devices may not be adequately supported. Various users have shared screenshots on social media of the error message stating "Unreliable device" and mentioning that the device could not be verified, suggesting that this might be due to outdated firmware.
Concern has grown among users, who fear that Google is sidelining these devices, which have been on the market for several years now. However, according to information from industry sources, the company has not officially announced that it is in the process of discontinuing these models, unlike what happened with the original Chromecast in 2023. At least one user has contacted Google support, who confirmed they are aware of the situation and are awaiting a solution.
It is worth noting that Google suspended production of the Chromecast line in August of last year, although it stated that it would continue to offer software and security updates for the newer devices. If these two models are indeed approaching the end of their lifecycle, it would be a shame, especially for the Chromecast Audio, which, despite having more advanced competitors, stands out for its unique charm as a small music player shaped like a vinyl record.
