Prototypes of Microsoft's Surface Laptop with Intel's Lunar Lake chips leak.
It is reported that the new Surface Laptop with Intel technology will be released in 2025.
Microsoft launched the Surface Laptop 7 earlier this year, opting not to include Intel chips as part of its strategy to promote the use of Windows on Arm and Qualcomm's Snapdragon X Elite chips. However, it seems that next year there could be a new version of the Surface Laptop equipped with Intel's latest Lunar Lake processors.
A prototype of the Surface Laptop has been discovered in a listing on Goofish, a second-hand market in China, which has already been removed. This prototype includes what appears to be Intel's Core Ultra 7 268V processor. Although the listing was found by Windows Central, it is unclear whether this will be a variant of the Surface Laptop 7 or if it will be the Surface Laptop 8.
The device in question is clearly marked as a prototype with the inscription "prototype - not for sale" on the bottom, suggesting that it is a genuine model not yet released to the market by Microsoft. Leaks of this kind are rare, and it is even more unusual for a prototype to be offered on an online sales platform.
The prototype closely resembles the Surface Laptop 7. If Microsoft is considering the inclusion of Lunar Lake chips in its Surface Laptop line, this would provide users with an Intel option for those interested in the Copilot Plus features on PC. The Surface Pro 10 and Surface Laptop 6 models that were launched earlier this year featured Intel’s Meteor Lake processors but did not include a sufficiently powerful NPU to leverage Microsoft’s Copilot Plus functions. These models were aimed at businesses and did not showcase the refreshed designs of the Surface Pro 11 and Surface Laptop 7 models.
The information about the prototype suggests that the unannounced device could go on sale at some point in 2025, which could indicate an announcement at CES 2025, provided that Microsoft is ready for consumer launch. Another possibility is that the company continues to restrict Intel-based Surface devices to commercial customers. A comment has been sought from Microsoft regarding this leaked prototype, but there was no response before publication.
