Microsoft introduces significant MIDI improvements in Windows 11.

Windows 11 is undergoing one of its most significant updates concerning the MIDI protocol, which has been fundamental in the field of music production since its creation in 1983. Microsoft has revealed that the latest Canary preview version of Windows 11 includes a public preview of Windows MIDI Services, which not only supports MIDI 2.0 but also allows MIDI 1.0 to function on Windows devices with Arm architecture.

The MIDI protocol, which stands for Musical Instrument Digital Interface, is used to transmit and store music, and its role is essential in modern music production. It facilitates the connection of electronic instruments to computers and other devices, allowing for precise control and synchronization. The MIDI 2.0 version was announced in 2019 and promises improvements in areas such as speed, fidelity, and instrument control. This update marks the first time the updated protocol will be available on Microsoft’s operating system.

While experimental versions like build 27788 of Windows are not yet ready for general use, the new Windows MIDI services system is intended to provide an enhanced experience for musicians.
