It is advisable to update the firmware of your Sony headphones.

Sony has released firmware updates for its premium wireless headphones, the WF-1000XM5 and WH-1000XM5. These updates introduce new features that were also presented alongside the company's newly announced LinkBuds speaker, as well as compatibility with Google’s Find My Device network, making it easier to locate them in case of loss.

Recently, Sony unveiled its new LinkBuds headphone line and a wireless speaker that includes an Auto Switch feature. This option allows the speaker to take over audio playback when the headphones are no longer in use. Currently, only five models of Sony's wireless headphones are compatible with this feature, including the WH-1000XM5 and WF-1000XM5, provided the new firmware is installed.

The updates also require Sony's new Sound Connect app, released this week. This could facilitate locating any of the devices on Google's Find My Device network. However, it is specified that this functionality is available "only during classic audio connection." Although Sony does not elaborate, this could imply that the last known location of the headphones can only be accessed if they are not powered on or actively connected to an Android device, or that Find My Device may not be accessible when using other Bluetooth connection modes like low latency.

The version 2.3.1 update for the WH-1000XM5 headphones also includes enhanced security features, while version 4.0.2 for the WF-1000XM5 adds support for "Google Fast Pair via prioritized LE Audio connection," simplifying the pairing process with Android devices.
