Listen to Ashly Burch's opinion, actress from Horizon Zero Dawn, on the possibility of Sony's artificial intelligence replacing her job.
Burch shared his reflections on Instagram.
Ashly Burch, a renowned voice and acting actress, is famous for portraying Aloy in Horizon Zero Dawn, one of the standout characters in PlayStation. Recently, she expressed her concern regarding a leaked experiment from Sony in which her character would be represented by artificial intelligence technology instead of by her or any other human.
A video containing an internal prototype was previously shared but was removed from YouTube by a company engaged in copyright protection working with Sony PlayStation. Burch indicated that the developer Guerrilla Games confirmed to her that this prototype is not in active development and that her voice or facial data was not used in the demonstration. However, having had access to the demo, Burch feels uneasy not only about her own career but about the video game entertainment industry as a whole. In her own words: "I worry about this form of art."
Burch highlighted that SAG-AFTRA, the actors' union, is currently on strike against the video game industry due to the implementation of artificial intelligence. The struggle focuses on obtaining protections for actors, requiring their prior consent before an AI version of their performances can be created. They also advocate for fair compensation and clarity on how their AI "double" will be used.
The actress is not simply afraid of technological advancement or the companies' desire to implement it. Her concern lies in the possibility that a video similar to the one mentioned, but featuring the actual performance of an actor, could be released without that actor having legal resources or protection against unauthorized use. The idea that someone could be stripped of their rights deeply distresses her.
Burch expressed her love and dedication to the industry, wishing for a new generation of actors and more memorable performances in video games. She has worked on notable titles such as The Last of Us Part II and Spider-Man, but she is best known for her roles as Chloe Price in the Life Is Strange series and Tiny Tina in Borderlands, in addition to her involvement in the live-action D&D role in Critical Role and as a writer on Apple TV Plus's Mythic Quest.
