It seems that Claude is incorporating a "extended thinking" feature.

Images of the Claude mobile application have been leaked on a social platform, revealing a new "extended thinking" feature and a web search tool.

Anthropic has revealed today through posts on X images of its AI assistant, Claude, showcasing a new "extended thinking" option and a web search tool in its mobile app. Details on how these features will work and their release date have not yet been provided. However, it seems that the extended thinking feature will be available only to Pro users.

Claude, while less known than other generative AI assistants like ChatGPT, Gemini, and DeepSeek, keeps up with the latest trends in language models. Accompanied by a clock icon, the "extended thinking" feature appears to allow Claude to reflect longer on its responses and expose its reasoning process. This functionality could be comparable to OpenAI's o1 and o1-mini models, which also spend more time "thinking" and exhibit reasoning in their responses. Similarly, it could resemble the "chain of thought" function of the DeepSeek R1 model, which provides a step-by-step explanation of the model's reasoning separate from its final answer. Gemini's Flash Thinking model also shows a detailed breakdown of the "thinking process."

A key difference between these advanced reasoning features lies in how much of the thinking process is presented to the user. OpenAI, for example, chose to hide the thinking chain of its o1 model to keep it unfiltered, thereby avoiding the exposure of unedited content. Such logic suggests that the thinking chain explanations of DeepSeek R1 and Gemini Flash Thinking might be edited or controlled to prevent "strange" thoughts from emerging.

It is not yet known when or how the extended thinking feature will be implemented in Claude. Nevertheless, its goal seems to be the same as its competitors': to spend more time and provide more "reasoned" responses to complex queries.

As for the web search beta, shown in a second screenshot, direct internet access is something Claude users have desired for some time. Until now, the model had a "self-contained" design, but given the trend of other competitors adding web browsing capabilities, it seems Anthropic has deemed it necessary to add this feature to remain competitive. It is still unknown who will have access to these new features or when they will be available, but all users are expected to be able to experience them at some point.
