According to reports from Google Trends, the search for these alternatives experienced significant growth, peaking on October 8, 2024, with a recorded score of 100.

This surge in interest reflects a shift in user behavior, as individuals actively seek options that better align with their expectations regarding performance, control, and transparency. Before October 8, no searches for alternatives to WordPress were recorded from October 4 to 7. This sudden increase has been attributed to the intense legal and public disputes between WP Engine and Mullenweg, who has accused WP Engine of trademark infringement and jeopardizing WordPress's open-source philosophy.

The conflict centers on WP Engine's mismanagement of certain WordPress features, such as limiting revision history on posts and the potentially misleading use of the "WP" brand, which Mullenweg argues confuses users into thinking that WP Engine is directly affiliated with WordPress. Tensions escalated when Mullenweg described WP Engine as a "cancer for WordPress," leading both parties to exchange cease-and-desist letters. WP Engine, for its part, argues that its use of WordPress trademarks falls under fair use.

The situation became further complicated when Mullenweg restricted WP Engine's access to resources from WordPress.org, severely impacting websites hosted on WP Engine and leaving them vulnerable to security risks. Between October 4 and November 4, 2024, a notable increase in global interest in alternatives to WordPress was observed, with countries like the United States, Canada, Germany, India, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Brazil showing greater curiosity about these options. Following the peak on October 8, interest continued, albeit with less intensity; between October 21 and 30, scores fluctuated between 20 and 36, indicating a steady but less urgent curiosity for alternatives to content management systems.
