Herman Miller launches a convertible standing desk with an attractive design.
An expensive way to get off the couch.
Herman Miller has launched a new height-adjustable desk that strays from conventional design. Unlike traditional desks that use only two columns to adjust the height of the work surface, the Spout Sit-to-Stand Table features four cylindrical legs, each equipped with its own motor. This clever design allows for greater ease of movement (including the option for wheels) and makes it possible for more people to use it simultaneously, while also offering a weight capacity of up to 400 pounds.
However, one notable drawback of Herman Miller products, such as the Spout, is their high price. According to the information provided by the company, the Spout will be available in different sizes, ranging from 24x48 inches to 48x84 inches. However, on Herman Miller's website, only three dimensions are currently offered for purchase: a 23x46 inch option starting at $2,300, a 29x58 inch size for $2,600, and a 35x70 inch version costing $2,700. Additionally, opting for a walnut finish and a concealed cable management system in the largest version raises the price to $3,400.
The innovative leg arrangement of the Spout allows the larger versions to provide enough space for chairs around all four sides, making it a more practical piece of furniture for collaborative spaces, as long as users agree on when to raise or lower the desk height.
Although the cable tray, which sits beneath the table to hide cable clutter, is an optional accessory, the Spout includes a cable management system on its underside, with clips on one of the legs to organize the power cord. Moreover, it features an integrated storage drawer on one side, spacious enough to hold laptops and other small electronic devices, which can also be charged while inside.
Another standout feature of the Spout is its compatibility with Herman Miller’s new Ello Power accessories. The desk surface has been integrated with a pair of USB-C ports capable of delivering up to 100W of power each, enough to charge a laptop; however, the power is reduced to 65W if both ports are in use. For those needing more connectivity, additional USB-C ports can be added through extra accessories.
