Google makes it harder to accidentally dial 911 on the Pixel watch.

A new feature is designed to reduce the number of accidental 911 calls from Pixel watches, and it is now being rolled out to Pixel Watch users.

The SOS Emergency feature on Pixel devices has been highlighted for its usefulness in ensuring the safety of its users. However, it can lead to uncomfortable situations if it is accidentally activated, such as sending a compromising video to all emergency contacts. To avoid unfortunate incidents, Google has implemented an update on Pixel Watches that will come into effect. Announced at the end of January, this new feature is currently being rolled out to users.

Now, if the user presses the crown button five times, not only will it immediately call 911; the user will first be required to hold the screen for three seconds before making the call. This additional step aims to minimize the likelihood of accidental calls to 911. However, this new setting presents an inconvenience: the extra time required to make the call may be less safe in critical situations. Those who prefer the previous setting, which allowed an automatic call, can revert to the earlier option.

All Pixel Watch users will receive a notification about this SOS Emergency update after upgrading to version 2025.01.23.x of Wear OS. Emergency functions have proven their importance on various occasions. One example is the case of three students who were rescued in April 2023 thanks to the SOS Emergency feature of an iPhone while they were trapped in a canyon in Utah. The ability to request help discreetly can make a vital difference in extreme situations.

It is essential to remember that if an accidental call to 911 is made, one should not hang up. This could trigger a protocol that leads operators to call back. Instead, it is better to stay on the line and explain that it was an unintentional dial. Such mistakes are more common than one might think and do not incur penalties, as long as they do not become a regular occurrence.
