ChatGPT for macOS now allows direct editing of projects in Xcode.

OpenAI has started rolling out an update for ChatGPT on macOS that includes integration with development environment applications (IDEs).

With the latest app update (version 1.2025.057), ChatGPT on macOS becomes more useful for developers by allowing code editing directly in an integrated development environment, eliminating the need to copy and paste. A complete list of supported development environments can be found on OpenAI's website, but some of the most notable include Apple's Xcode, Visual Studio Code, and JetBrains variants like Android Studio and PyCharm.

OpenAI has indicated that the integration with development environments has been one of the most requested features by macOS users since the company launched its "works with app" framework in November. Plus, Pro, or Team subscribers can already begin using this feature, while Enterprise, Edu, and Free users will have to wait until next week to obtain the updated version of the app.

This release comes at a time when the term "vibecoding" has become popular. For those unfamiliar, vibecoding refers to a programming technique that uses artificial intelligence tools like ChatGPT, along with what is called "vibes," to develop applications and games. While it may sound like a joke, vibecoding is a real practice. In a video titled "Vibe Coding is the Future," Jared Friedman, managing partner at Y Combinator, claimed that one-quarter of the W25 cohort from the startup accelerator has a codebase that was generated 95 percent by artificial intelligence. Garry Tan, CEO of Y Combinator, also highlighted in the same video that this trend is not fleeting and is becoming the dominant way to program, suggesting that those who do not adapt to this method may fall behind.
