Bluesky has updated its verification system, although it still lacks an official system on par with traditional platforms like Instagram or TikTok. As part of a minor update, the platform has implemented a change that could be significant in protecting usernames from impersonation. From now on, if a user decides to change their Bluesky handle to a domain name, the old handle—which may include their full name—will be reserved and cannot be claimed by anyone else. This means that the old handle will not expire, thereby offering a sort of "eternal ownership" similar to that of website domains, which typically can return to the market if not renewed.

In the case of Bluesky, the focus on domain names is key, as it serves as a form of verification for accounts. According to reports, the platform allows users to set their website as their username, thereby functioning as proof of authenticity, especially recommending this to official organizations and prominent figures.

Bluesky has also introduced a new system to help users find and secure a domain name if they do not already own one. This can be a bit confusing compared to other social networks, which allow for easier verification of full names and custom handles. However, Bluesky stands out because it is based on the AT Protocol, meaning that user activity and profiles are not owned by the platform itself and can be transferred to any other platform that uses the same protocol.

Despite these improvements, Bluesky still lacks a visual indicator to confirm that a handle is verified. Nonetheless, having a domain is a clear indication of authenticity. Additionally, the introduction of a mention tab, similar to those offered by other microblogging platforms, allows users to filter notifications for messages that specifically mention their handle.

As these platforms continue to evolve, with Threads reaching 300 million users and Bluesky approaching 25 million, there is a growing resemblance among them. The future of these networks remains uncertain, but Bluesky is making strategic moves to stay competitive.
