Amazon shuts down its app store on Android.
Amazon will cease operations of its Android app store on August 20 of this year. The company has notified developers that it will no longer be available.
Amazon has decided to shut down its app store for Android starting August 20 of this year. The company informed developers that they will no longer be able to submit new apps to the store. In a support page, Amazon announced that it would also be ending its digital currency program, Amazon Coins, which allowed purchases of games and apps within the store.
"Starting August 20, 2025, you will no longer have access to the Amazon Appstore on your Android device. We will also discontinue the Amazon Coins program on that same date," the company stated on its support page. Additionally, Amazon committed to refund any coins users hold until August 20.
The company emphasized that only a small proportion of users utilized the app store outside of its devices. "We have decided to discontinue the Amazon Appstore on Android to focus our efforts on the Appstore experience on our own devices, as that is where the vast majority of our customers currently interact with it," a company spokesperson stated.
Despite this decision, the Amazon Appstore will continue to operate on the brand's devices, such as Fire TV and Fire Tablet. Last year, security researchers from McAfee Labs detected an app within the Amazon Appstore that posed as a health tool to spread malware. Since 2011, Amazon has attempted to compete with Google by creating an alternative ecosystem of app stores. It also tried to boost its failed Fire Phone project by using its own app store.
The previous year, the company announced that it would suspend support for its app store on Windows, which offered Android apps, starting March 5, 2025, after launching this program in 2021.
