Your Netflix account is not suspended: tips to avoid the new SMS scam.
Tips to protect your Netflix credentials and prevent scammers from stealing them.
A recent scam campaign has emerged through text messages, aiming to deceive Netflix users into believing that their accounts have been suspended. This scheme has affected phone numbers in 23 countries, taking advantage of the large number of subscribers the platform has, which exceeds 280 million worldwide.
Scammers send messages claiming to be from Netflix, stating that there was a problem with the subscription payment. They then ask the user to update their information via a link that leads to a fake login page designed to resemble the real one. If a user enters their information, it ends up in the hands of criminals, who could use it to access the Netflix account or even sell it on the dark web.
Furthermore, the deception worsens: upon accessing the fake page, the user may receive an additional message indicating that their account has been temporarily suspended due to a payment issue. At this point, they are prompted to make a payment using their credit or debit card, allowing the scammers to obtain their financial details. They are also offered the option to pay with a Netflix gift card, which would provide the criminals with the value of that card.
This type of scam relies on creating a sense of urgency, as many users find it unacceptable to lose access to their account over a payment error. This fear can cause them to act quickly without considering warning signs.
It is important to note that Netflix accounts are particularly vulnerable to these attacks because the platform does not offer two-factor authentication. Therefore, anyone with the username and password can access the account without restrictions.
Netflix has a section on its website dedicated to informing users about phishing emails and text messages, warning them not to provide personal information if they receive solicitations through these channels. If a suspicious message is received, it is advisable not to click on unknown links, and if there is any doubt, it is best to go directly to Netflix.com to verify the account status. If there is suspicion that the account has been compromised, it is recommended to change the password and log out of unrecognized devices. In case of receiving a message that seems like a scam, users should forward it to the email address provided by the company and then delete it.
