Yann LeCun from Meta claims that concerns about the existential threat of artificial intelligence are 'completely absurd'.
Yann LeCun, a pioneer in artificial intelligence, believes that this technology is not really on the verge of reaching a level of intelligence similar to that of humans. LeCun is a professor at New York University.
Yann LeCun, a prominent pioneer in the field of artificial intelligence, has expressed his belief that we are not close to developing truly intelligent artificial intelligence. As a professor at New York University, a senior researcher at Meta, and a recipient of the A.M. Turing Award, LeCun has voiced his skepticism about the current capabilities of AI. In a recent interview, he addressed concerns over whether AI could pose a threat to humanity, stating clearly that this idea is completely misguided.
LeCun emphasized that current language models lack essential skills that even cats possess, such as persistent memory, reasoning, planning, and an understanding of the physical world. According to him, large language models (LLMs) merely demonstrate that "it is possible to manipulate language without being truly intelligent" and do not indicate true artificial general intelligence (AGI). While he is not a total skeptic regarding AGI, he underscored that new approaches will be necessary to progress toward that goal, such as his team's work at Meta related to understanding real-world videos.
