WhatsApp hopes you want to interact with artificial intelligence bots.

Don't worry about your friends; on WhatsApp, you can chat with a wide variety of artificial intelligence chatbots.

Meta is testing a revamped design for WhatsApp, its popular messaging app, which gives greater visibility to a set of AI-powered chatbots. This new interface, currently available only in the beta version for Android, includes a dedicated tab for AI functionalities on the app's main screen.

The modification, detected by WABetaInfo, allocates one of the four WhatsApp tabs exclusively to its AI features. Within this section, users will find a variety of “popular AI characters” to interact with, as well as chatbots organized by specific themes. AI-powered tools are also included, such as automatically generated images and stickers, along with a search system that utilizes Meta AI.

Although these AI tools are not entirely new to the app, access is limited to the United States and a few other countries, along with a reduced number of languages. Previously, they were accessible through the main Chats tab, but this update aims to give them more prominence.

Another interesting aspect being explored is the possibility for users to create their own AI characters, a feature that has been found in a current beta. While Meta already offers the creation of custom bots through an AI Studio on Instagram’s website, integrating it within the app significantly simplifies the process.

The new AI tab replaces the Communities tab, although the latter will still exist, as a “simplified” version of its creation has been introduced within the Chats tab. The WhatsApp beta is available on Google Play, though the number of testers is limited, and there is currently no option to join. It remains unclear if and when the AI tab will be included in the app's stable version, though it is likely that changes will be limited to the countries where AI features are already available.
