We tested Sony's new XYN headset: a revolution for 3D content creators.

Sony is fully committed to the creation of spatial content.

In the current context, where the virtual reality market has become saturated with devices like the Meta Quest and the Apple Vision Pro, Sony has decided to decisively venture into the creation of spatial content. During CES 2025, the company showcased its XYN line of tools dedicated to the creation of 3D spatial content, which includes an innovative virtual reality headset.

Unlike other VR headsets that are focused on entertainment and multimedia consumption, the Sony XYN headset is exclusively designed to meet the needs of creators developing three-dimensional content. This device features advanced technologies, such as 4K micro-OLED displays and sophisticated video pass-through capabilities, allowing creators to fully immerse themselves in three-dimensional worlds and efficiently manipulate 3D models. Additionally, its design is lightweight and comfortable, making it ideal for long working sessions.

It is important to mention that, although the product has already been demonstrated, the Sony XYN headset is still in the prototype phase, and its controllers are likely to undergo a complete overhaul before the final version.

At the event, another highlight was the XYN spatial capture solution, which allows users to easily create 3D models of real-world objects. This tool transforms images obtained through a mirrorless camera into photorealistic 3D CG assets, establishing an efficient workflow that connects the capture of physical images with interaction in VR.

Furthermore, Sony is developing a mobile application that will allow creators to use their smartphones' cameras to carry out the same capture process, providing even more flexibility in the creation of three-dimensional content.

Finally, within the XYN line, the XYN Motion Studio was introduced, which combines advanced motion capture technology with comprehensive software. This system, which uses twelve mocopi sensors, enables creators to incorporate their movements into an editing suite and adjust the animation of 3D models accurately. Among its innovations, it stands out for its ability to fill in movement gaps, intelligently generating realistic actions in cases where the capture was not perfect. This simplifies the motion capture process and makes it more accessible for creators who do not have access to large-scale motion capture studios.
