Valve will be the 'special guest' of Lenovo at the upcoming portable console event.
It seems that the SteamOS Legion Go will be safely unveiled at CES.
An email in my inbox announces: “The future of handheld consoles will be unveiled at CES ‘25, and you have a privileged spot to see it!” In short, it seems that Lenovo has implicitly confirmed that it will reveal its first handheld console with SteamOS in Las Vegas, possibly before January 7, 2025. This device is expected to be the Legion Go S, which was mentioned by leaker Evan Blass last week.
The occasion on January 7 is called “Lenovo Legion x AMD: The Future of Handheld Consoles,” and will feature a special guest: Pierre-Loup Griffais, co-designer of SteamOS and Steam Deck. Lenovo and AMD refer to him as the “Principal Design Architect” at Valve for this event. It’s worth noting that many employees at Valve are simply considered designers, as they frequently change teams and tasks. Over time, Griffais has been one of the few public figures associated with SteamOS and Steam Deck, which is intriguing.
In addition to Griffais, Jason Ronald, Vice President of Gaming Devices at Xbox, will also participate in the panel. He is now presented as the “VP of Next Generation” at Microsoft.
It was recently revealed that Lenovo plans to update its larger handheld console, seemingly based on Windows, with detachable controllers. The company is also expected to create a Windows version of the smaller Legion Go S, based on these same leaks. It’s likely that some, if not all, of these devices will include AMD’s new Z2 Extreme chips, the details of which have yet to be disclosed.
The event promises a cocktail reception organized by the gaming leaders of Lenovo Legion and AMD, accompanied by special guests from Valve and other major companies in the industry. Attendees will gain insights into the future of handheld consoles and see recent innovations in the Lenovo Legion Go, powered by AMD. The description invites attendees to experience how Lenovo Legion and AMD Ryzen are transforming immersion in gaming.
No unexpected announcement of a handheld Xbox console is anticipated from Microsoft at this event, as gaming director Phil Spencer has indicated that it could take a few years. However, there is a possibility that both companies might suggest that all handheld consoles are essentially Xbox consoles, in line with the new marketing campaign “This is an Xbox.”
I will be attending and will share more details after the event.
