Unity seeks to change the situation with the launch of its new game engine.
Unity 6 is now available.
Unity has faced challenges recently, but in an effort to regain the trust of video game developers, the company has globally launched Unity 6. This new version includes tools that allow developers to focus on mobile web development. Additionally, Unity has promised to invest long-term resources to "improve functionalities and offer new capabilities while maintaining ease of updates and stability," according to a statement.
Unity is a widely used game development engine, responsible for titles such as Among Us and Hollow Knight, but the launch of Unity 6 comes after a challenging period for the company. Previously, Unity charged developers per user; however, in September 2023, they announced a new pricing scheme that involved fees for each installation of their games after reaching a certain threshold. This change raised significant concerns among developers, who voiced their frustration.
Although Unity made adjustments to its fee model in response to the criticism, its CEO, John Riccitiello, announced his resignation shortly after, and was replaced in May by Matthew Bromberg, a former executive from Zynga and EA. Last month, Unity decided to completely cancel the implementation of the usage fee.
With the launch of Unity 6, the company aims to rebuild its relationship with its clients and reaffirm its commitment to delivering what truly matters to them, as stated by Bromberg. Furthermore, Unity must solidify its position among developers as it faces ongoing competition from Epic Games' Unreal Engine. In a recent interview, Epic's CEO, Tim Sweeney, outlined the company’s plans for the next decade, which include the development of Unreal Engine 6, the next major version of the product.
