Amazon has updated its Kindle Scribe, an e-reader that allows for handwritten input, along with other Kindle models. Although the new Scribe 2024 retains a design similar to its predecessor, it features enhancements in annotation and AI-driven summarization functionalities. The previous generation of the Kindle Scribe has recently received an update that incorporates two standout features.
The first addition is Active Canvas, which allows users to make annotations anywhere within the books in their digital library, mimicking the experience of writing in a physical book. With this functionality, notes are displayed in a box that is anchored to the section of text, improving clarity compared to the previous format where annotations appeared at the top of the page. Additionally, the highlighting options now include underlining that automatically adjusts to the text.
The second new feature is an AI-based summarization system, which transforms handwritten notes into more legible text while maintaining a handwritten look. This function helps organize handwritten notes, providing a smoother experience when reviewing them. Users of the first-generation Kindle Scribe will receive a notification about the update when they power on the device, and they can also manually install it through the settings.
With these improvements, the older Kindle Scribe approaches the performance of the new model, available for $340 with a basic pen. Those seeking a more modern and premium design can opt for the 2024 model, which features a green finish.
In another realm, the Kindle Paperwhite is facing new competitors such as the Onyx Boox Go 6, which, with its next-generation screen and a price of $150, could be an attractive option for those looking for alternatives in the e-reader segment.
