The Internet Archive is one of the most notable resources on the web, and it’s good news that this repository is back online after suffering recent DDoS attacks. It not only stores old versions of web pages but also has a vast collection of videos, software, texts, audio recordings, and video games. Recently, two significant titles in the realm of video games have been added: Unreal and Unreal Tournament, apparently with the support of Epic Games.
It is now possible to download disk images of these arena shooters directly from the Internet Archive via specific links for Unreal and Unreal Tournament. Additionally, as noted in Game Developer, the site OldUnreal offers installers for these games, which obtain the disk images from the Internet Archive and include the latest community-created patches. For now, the installers are exclusive to Windows, although the OldUnreal team is working on versions for Linux and macOS.
However, a bit more effort is required to play online and enjoy the true multiplayer experiences they offer. There may still be an opportunity to join a Unreal clan. It’s worth remembering that Epic removed these games from Steam and shut down their servers some time ago, so this new access represents a significant advancement for the preservation of video games. This initiative comes shortly after GOG launched a new label for older titles that it is maintaining for contemporary hardware. Unreal was one of the first video games I played during my childhood, so it’s exciting to know that it will be permanently available through the Internet Archive.
