Tumblr launches group spaces with Communities.

This new feature on Tumblr seems quite familiar...

Tumblr has launched a new feature called "Communities," inspired by popular concepts on platforms like Reddit and Facebook. This feature allows users to create digital spaces similar to subreddits or Facebook groups, where they can interact with people who share their interests. According to the platform, "Communities are a new and easy way to connect with other Tumblr users who understand your passions."

Users have the option to invite friends who share similar obsessions to a private Community or to set up a public Community to share their tastes, where the number of members can be quite large. This feature encompasses an infinite variety of topics, from D&D campaigns to cat photos, and has been available in beta for some users, with its official rollout occurring on December 12th across all web platforms, iOS, and Android.

It’s no surprise that Tumblr has decided to adopt more established social media strategies, especially at a time when it has struggled to maintain relevance following the adult content ban in 2018. This move reflects a broader trend in the tech world, where platforms often mimic the successful features of others. Examples include Instagram Reels, which replicated TikTok’s format, or Facebook Stories, which drew inspiration from Snapchat. The lingering question is: will we see Communities on TikTok soon?
