Troy Baker did not consider himself fit for the role of Indiana Jones.
Todd Howard and Troy Baker share details about the process of bringing an iconic character back to life in the video game universe for "Indiana Jones and the Great Circle."
On December 9, Indiana Jones will return to video games with his first adaptation in over ten years: Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. This new title promises an extraordinary experience, offering over three hours of cinematic scenes, various tools for players, and an adventure that spans the globe. Expectations for the launch are high, and pre-orders are already available.
In a recent conversation with executive producer Todd Howard and actor Troy Baker, who plays Indiana Jones, they both shared their experiences in creating The Great Circle and the challenges they faced in transforming such an iconic character into a video game hero.
Baker admitted that, at first, he was not convinced he was fit for the role, much like Howard. The latter mentioned that, although Ford and Spielberg are aware of the project, the team relied on the films to bring the character to life.
The game is set between Raiders of the Lost Ark and Last Crusade, which focuses on a young Indiana. Baker prepared for this challenge by watching the films and listening to the music of John Williams, emphasizing that Harrison Ford, along with Lucas and Spielberg, are the architects of Indiana's character, but that the audience's connection with the character also plays a crucial role.
Regarding his selection for the role, Baker revealed that he initially didn't see himself as suitable for it. A director he didn't know contacted him to propose the role, leading to an audition that surprised everyone, even starting with a joke from Howard about his choice.
The chemistry between them was highlighted, to the point where all the tests conducted pointed to Baker as the best option. When discussing comparisons with other franchises like Uncharted or Tomb Raider, Howard assured that while the game contains a strong cinematic component, it still remains a video game at its core.
The two also addressed the success they have had in recent years, with Howard on the adaptation of Fallout, which has been well-received, and Baker as the voice of Joel in The Last of Us, which has won multiple awards. They both agreed that the key to success lies in keeping the original creators involved in the adaptation process, ensuring that the spirit of the franchises is respected and authentically reflected.
