Threshold Care has introduced its new Motion Wi-Fi Sensing plugs, designed to help caregivers monitor elderly individuals, such as aging parents, in a non-invasive manner while respecting the privacy of all household members. This Wi-Fi sensing technology integrates a system that measures physical interference with Wi-Fi signals, allowing real-time monitoring of movement without the need for images or photographs.

This advancement in Wi-Fi sensing technology has been discussed for several years, having been part of motion detection security features in Linksys Velop routers and also used by Signify in its Wiz bulbs, which turn on when someone enters a room and turn off when they leave.

The Motion plugs are marketed in a pack of three for a cost of $59.99, allowing them to be placed in different areas of the home and thus create a comprehensive motion detection zone, communicating with the existing Wi-Fi router. The company describes them as a "plug and play" solution, avoiding the need for wearable devices that may require batteries or subscription services for continued use.

The ability to monitor movement enables a caregiver to check if a person is moving around the house in the morning; a lack of movement could indicate a problem. Additionally, detecting movement at unusual times, such as in the middle of the night, can alert to potential incidents. Users can monitor movement patterns and access movement data for up to two weeks through the app available for both iOS and Android.

However, these plugs do not include typical "smart plug" functionalities, such as controlling the power of connected devices. While they have pass-through AC outlets, that is the only feature available at launch. Furthermore, Threshold has indicated that it is working on additional features, such as a "Care Circle" that will manage shared access to the system and customizable notifications, which are expected to be implemented in November.
